Indigenous Peoples Day 2021
October 11, 2021
Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day. It’s a day to honor the cultures and histories of Indigenous
People and an opportunity to celebrate Indigenous excellence, achievements, and contributions.
Indigenous Peoples Day is centered around reflecting on tribal roots to empower and strengthen
communities.
Homelessness disproportionately affects Indigenous people due to economic hardships, being
displaced from traditional lands, barriers to health care, or impacts from historical trauma.
Although we do not have estimates of the number of Indigenous People experiencing
homelessness on traditional lands, we know that Indigenous People are overrepresented in the
literally unhoused population. About 1 in 200 people who identify American Indian and Alaska
Native (AIAN) as their only race is homeless, compared with 1 in 1,000 people in the US
population overall ( Source: Urban Institute: Homelessness in Indian Country is hidden, but a critical problem. April 10, 2017).
AHCH’s mission is to provide caring and comprehensive health and integrated supportive
services, linking people experiencing homelessness to individual and collective solutions to
homelessness and uphold a commitment to diversity and equity.
AHCH strives to inform its efforts to end homelessness by working and learning from
indigenous people who are experiencing homelessness.
