The Land We Stand On

Land Acknowledgement

Our Statement

"Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless acknowledges New Mexico’s Indigenous peoples such as the 19 Pueblos, and the Apache Tribes, and the Diné Tribe, whose generational and spiritual connections to the land have carried to this day. We also recognize the Pueblo of Isleta as one of the original stewards and inhabitants of the land our buildings stand on."

The following reasons why a land acknowledgement statement is important are:

- Acknowledges the original inhabitants and stewards of the land before colonization.
- Acknowledges displacement, dispossession and loss for the people that lived here before.
- The statement helps to create awareness of Indigenous presence in everyday life.
- Creates accountability, and helps to build reverent relationships with Indigenous peoples.

A little history on the statement:

The statement was created with the input of local indigenous peoples. One nation declined participation and stated their people and leadership value their privacy. The Pueblo of Isleta, has concurred to the statement and helped finalize the statement.
